The Old Fashioned is comfort in a glass, combining good bourbon or rye with a touch of sugar and a few dashes of bitters—it’s a comforting, simple, and timeless blend that never fails to satisfy.
Cocktail Codex Preferred
Ingredients
- 2 oz (60 ml) Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon
- 1 teaspoon Demerara Gum Syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash Bitter Truth aromatic bitters
- Orange peel and lemon peel for garnish
Steps
- Chill a Old Fashioned glass in the freezer.
- In a mixing glass, add bourbon, Demerara syrup, Angostura bitters, and Bitter Truth aromatic bitters.
- Add cubed ice and stir until walls of mixing glass get frosty.
- Add a large ice cube to the chilled Old Fashioned glass.
- Strain the mixture into the glass.
- Express the oils from the orange peel and lemon peel onto the drink.
- Rub the orange peel around the rim of the glass.
- Place orange and lemon peel into drink for garnish.

- Clear ice is preferred.

With Muddled Orange
Ingredients
- 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon
- 0.25 oz (7.5 ml) rich Demerara syrup
- 4 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 small cut piece of orange for muddling
- Orange peel and cocktail cherry for garnish
Steps
- In a mixing glass, muddle the small piece of orange.
- Add bourbon or rye, Demerara syrup, and Angostura bitters.
- Add cubed ice and stir for about 30 seconds.
- Add a large ice cube to an Old Fashioned glass.
- Strain the mixture into the glass.
- Express the oils from the orange peel onto the drink.
- Garnish with the orange peel and cocktail cherry.
Notes
- There is, debatably, no one perfect bourbon for this drink. Use what any kind you want! I prefer rye.
